Domaine Pierre Gonon

Rhône

Domaine Pierre Gonon is a small, family-owned estate based in the village of Mauves in France’s Northern Rhône Valley, within the historic heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. The domaine has been in the Gonon family for several generations and is today run by brothers Jean and Pierre Gonon, who assumed control in the late 1980s. They farm approximately 10 hectares of steep, terraced vineyards rooted in granite soils across Mauves, Tournon, and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols — communes considered among the original and most prized sites of Saint-Joseph. The vineyards are cultivated organically (certified in the early 2010s), with meticulous manual work and a strong commitment to preserving old vines and traditional farming methods.

In the cellar, the Gonon brothers follow a restrained, low-intervention philosophy. Fermentations rely on native yeasts, extraction is gentle, and aging takes place largely in older oak barrels to avoid masking the character of the fruit and terroir. Their Saint-Joseph red, made from Syrah, is widely regarded as one of the benchmark expressions of the appellation — structured yet precise, known for its aromatics of violet, olive, pepper, and dark fruit, and its ability to age gracefully. Small production and high critical acclaim have made the wines highly sought after internationally, reinforcing the domaine’s reputation as one of the leading traditionalists of the Northern Rhône.
